It’s been a while since the last review. Real life matters were… pretty overwhelming. All that said, here’s a quick review (of sorts) of S.H. Figuarts SkyRider!
Also, I’ve reverted back to the initial style of posting reviews. I like bigger pictures than clickable thumbnails. =/
SkyRider is the protagonist of the 1979 series “Kamen Rider”. The 1979 series shares the same name as the original “Kamen Rider” show back in 1971. As such, fans often refer to the series as either “The New Kamen Rider” series, or simply “SkyRider”, in order to distinguish it from the original series. The character, SkyRider, was originally called “Kamen Rider” in the first 19 episodes. However, from episode 20 onwards, he was called “SkyRider” in order to prevent confusion with the original Kamen Rider.
As SkyRider’s name implies, he can… well, fly in the skies. He is the first Kamen Rider with flight capabilities. Although frankly, his belt is equipped with a Gravity Reduction Device. So he doesn’t exactly fly; it’s more of gliding really. The S.H. Figuarts version of SkyRider was released some time in February 2012. Yeah, I’m a little ‘behind’ for reviews. ><
Following the ‘new’ style of custom boxes for each character, SkyRider spots a very ugly shade of green for its box art…
In part due to the original design of the suit, the shoulder’s articulation feels a little… wonky. I’m not too sure how to describe it, but it definitely doesn’t feel as good as the normal Figuarts’. Also, the boots and gloves are in a glossy black… which sucks. It doesn’t quite match the overall matte finishing.
Oh yeah, also, really ugly seam line by the side of the helmet… It’s an eyesore.
The belt, Tornado, is quite nicely detailed, with the Gravity Reduction Device mounted on the sides of the belt. I also like the clear plastic covering on the belt.
The switch on the Gravity Reduction Device can be ‘flipped’, like in the show.
SkyRider comes with a few accessories. He has a custom stand, as well as a longer version of the muffler when he does his ‘Sailing Jump’ attack. He also has ‘chopping’ hands, and open hands to swap with for the fists.
Even the sole of the boot is nicely detailed.
With SkyRider joining the ranks of Ichigou, Nigou, Amazon, Black and Black RX, my Showa Rider collection is slowly expanding! My V3 is in already, just haven’t had time to open it up yet.
Till the next review, which should come some time next week!
I much prefer this style as well.
Hmm, I don’t like how this Skyrider figure looks. No idea why. May be the fact that it looks a bit too fake? Or it might be just me not liking Skyrider’s design to begin with, not sure.
I think it’s a combination of the odd design of the Rider and a poor colour scheme that makes SkyRider a little… odd-looking, and not so pleasant to the eyes.
